What is the Coronavirus
Covid-19 or the coronavirus has taken the world right by surprise. Coronavirus originated from Wuhan, China, and has stopped all proceedings everywhere in the world. Even the strongest medically strong countries are head in hands as they do not know how to tackle or stop this global pandemic. People are advised to stay indoors and practice the likes of social distancing, washing hands, and wearing masks and gloves.
This highly contagious disease has already taken the lives of 20,834 innocent people at the time of writing, with 462,684 reported cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).These numbers can drastically increase if strict measures are not taken quickly.
Is washing hands a necessity?
From a very young age, children are told to wash their hands regularly without really knowing what its benefits are. It is high time we educate children and elders about the benefits of washing hands and how we can prevent the spread of coronavirus through it.
To avoid getting sick and spreading germs, it is of utmost priority that we wash our hands regularly, especially under the current circumstances. This prevents illness and spread of infectious diseases as people often touch their faces without even realizing that they are risking themselves. Washing hands is not enough, especially against a strong virus-like corona. It is advised that you use soap and make hand sanitizers a major part of your life.
How to wash your hands properly
Above, we saw why washing hands are essential to battle the coronavirus. Unfortunately, many of us are unaware of the proper method to wash hands. Let us look at the appropriate way of washing our hands.
Step One: Open the tap with clean running water and wet your hands.
Step Two: Grab a soap or a liquid hand wash and apply it to your hands. Make sure you turn off the tap when applying as water is a scarce resource.
Step Three: Lather your hands by rubbing them together. Lather the back of your hands, under the nails and between your fingers as well.
Step Four: Scrub your hands for 20 seconds roughly. Turn the tap back on and rinse your hands thoroughly.
Step Five: Pat your hands dry using a towel or tissue paper
Now you know how to wash your hands properly!
Hand Sanitizers VS Washing Hands
Both of these are marketed under the same category. However, through closer inspection, we understand that washing hands with soap has better results than using a hand sanitizer. When tested under UV-light, the hand cleaned using a hand sanitizer had little to no change in terms of reduction in germs.
Alternatively, hands washed with soap carried much lesser germs. Doctors advise us to keep a hand sanitizer when leaving the house. It may be less effective, but something is better than nothing. Albeit, when you are home, you should wash your hands using soap and water for 20 seconds. Additionally, hand sanitizers are expensive, unlike running tap water and soap. Therefore, battling the coronavirus with hand sanitizers may not be the best strategy.
Other Measures to Prevent Corona Virus
Washing your hands was just one of the many ways to prevent coronavirus. Staying at home and self-isolate from others is one of these measures. Make sure you wear medicinal gloves and masks when leaving the house. Avoid social gatherings and overcrowded areas. Avoid close contact with people and maintain a 1-meter to 3-meter distance, at all costs. As the virus does not show symptoms until the first 14 days, people who may seem well may also carry the virus, therefore, be extra cautious. Cover your nose and mouth using a tissue or your elbow when sneezing or coughing. The virus spreads using the respiratory system; hence do not touch your face if your hands are unclean.
Negligence of Washing Hands and the Effects of Coronavirus
Not washing hands or taking other precautions can lead to massive issues. Firstly, coronavirus is causing deaths on a massive scale. Many are being affected by the virus, and the rate of recovery is scarce. The symptoms include a mild headache, severe fever, and difficulty in breathing. However, all is not lost. Those countries that have taken extra care and have attacked the virus by instilling medicinal precautions have seen a reduction in cases and deaths and have ‘flattened the curve.’ China is one of these countries. They took strict measures to control the outbreak of the virus. They emphasized on keeping good hygiene through encouraging acts such as washing hands, wearing gloves, etc.
Remarkably, since January, there have been a total of 74051 recovered cases, and for the first time in 2 months, the lockdown is being lifted after there were 0 new reported cases of the virus. This shows that keeping a strong immunity level will help fight off the disease. If other countries follow the likes of China, then they too can prevent further increase in the list of affected people. The World Health Organization states that over 80% of people with the coronavirus recover without needing any special treatment. As there is no real treatment to the coronavirus, it’s best if these measures are taken until a vaccine is prepared.
The coronavirus will be written in history as one of the biggest global pandemics ever to have taken place. It is uncertain how long it might take us to find a cure for this pandemic until then stay indoors and stay safe. However, it is more important that you wash your hands at regular intervals and educate others about the potential benefits of washing hands in the fight against covid-19. At a time like this, we need to take care of our loved ones. Perhaps the best way to do so is to stay away from them. The virus has shown little mercy to the human race. It is time that we take the attack to the coronavirus and remove it from existence.
