The outbreak of coronavirus has not been easy on anyone and has caused stressful times for many people throughout the world. If you are someone working from home, your stress levels may have been elevated even more, and food is a common stress-reliever. Similarly, having more free time on hand may have you overeating because of boredom. So what are some things you can do to avoid overeating when working from home?
Keep your Emotions in Check:
If you are someone who stress eats or eats more when experiencing depression or anxiety, you might need to check up on your mental health. Perhaps seeking professional help may be a good idea. A lot of therapists are providing sessions via video or phone call, and talking to someone may relieve you of some of your anxieties. Keep in touch with your friends and family, and keeping your emotional connections alive may also curb some of the feelings you’re feeling.
Eat on a Schedule:
The best thing at this time would be to keep a semblance of time, and the only way for your body to act is typically to keep giving it food only when it expects and not all the time. Following whatever eating schedule you followed before the lockdown is key. Having breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time as you would typically keep you full for longer and will prevent you from overeating.
Don’t Stock up on Junk Food:
This may be the perfect time for you to cut junk food out of your daily diet. While you’re out shopping for necessities during the lockdown, not buying junk food is a viable solution as you won’t be able to go out and buy it before you have to go to the store. Hence, not stocking up on junk food will do you good. If you have any lying around from before, hiding them now might be a good idea.
If you do need to snack between meals or get hungry if you’re continuously working, snacking on healthy things will keep you fuller longer and will have less damaging effects. While you avoid junk food, don’t forget to stock up on fruits and vegetables, and these will make the best of snacks to prevent overeating while in quarantine.
Hydration is Key:
A lot of people mistake being thirsty for hungry. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, and to set a time for every hour to remind you to drink a glass of water may be good if you tend to forget easily. Perhaps opting for other beverages besides water, such as tea, coffee, or fresh juice can also prevent you from going to food as the first option.
Indeed times are stressful, and a lot of people may not be feeling right with their mental health. However, it is important to remember this is only temporary and we must try our best to deal with the situation we’re in as healthily as possible!
